Wednesday

Dear Families,

Please check your child's RAZ-Kids account.  I have gone in and made sure the range of levels is accurate.  Please review and let me know if I need to make further changes.  If you have lost your child's password, please note that it is their CBE student ID.  I can also provide it upon request.

Many students haven't logged in to our home reading program for over a week!!  Please remember that RAZ-Kids is our primary home reading program and that reading daily is a pivotal part of learning to read and is to be completed with an adult present.

Students have grown by leaps and bounds over the past 33 days of school.  We are moving on from our first 25 'Power Words' explored so far this year and are on to discovering more wonderful words!  This week the students are being assessed on their 'Power Words' and other high-frequency words.  I will be sending a personalized list home with your child of words I would like them to read and practice at home.

Today, we started to explore the number 10 and came up with many ways to 'make' ten.  Please ask your child how they can 'make' ten (i.e. 1+9=10)

Starting on Monday, students will all take part in an intense 20 minutes literacy block in addition to our regular literacy activities. Students will receive small-group practice on the reading skills they are currently working towards.  These groups will take place up until the Winter break.

Have a wonderful night!
Ms. Bakkan

OCTOBER 24-28: REMINDERS

Dear Parents,

Just a couple of reminders for this week:

MONDAY: TD has donated books for each grade one student.  Please check your child's blue folder for the book, "Small Saul."  These books are for the students to keep.  If you have not returned your child's blue folder, please make sure it is in their backpack each day. If it does not come home, then there are no handouts for that day.

TUESDAY:  PICTURE DAY (Please return picture forms tomorrow)

WEDNESDAY:  FUN LUNCH (See school website)

PEANUTS: We now have a student in our class that has an allergy to peanuts.  Please restrain from sending peanut products to school for snacks and lunches.  Students may still bring these items but will be required to sit at a table designated for peanut products.

HALLOWEEN:  Students will be permitted to wear their costumes to school on Monday, October 31st.  Students should be able to manage their costumes and be able to take part in normal school activities. Some students prefer to save their costumes for the evening and wear orange and black on this day.  Pretend weapons of any kind are not permitted and should be left at home.  Please do not send treats to class, as we are unable to give them to students due to dietary restrictions and allergies. Thank you for your understanding.

VOLUNTEERS: If you are interested in volunteering for our class (preparation work &/or reading with students), please let me know.  Please remember that you need Security Clearance.  E-mail me at cobakkan@cbe.ab.ca

Stay tuned for pictures of our learning!

Thank you,
Ms. Bakkan
