Thursday/Friday

Dear Parents,

It appears that I forgot to blog yesterday.  Oops!

Here are our completed rainbows from yesterday:

Students worked well in groups and used only red, yellow and blue (primary colours) to complete their group rainbows.

We learned more about Terry Fox today and completed the Terry Fox run.

Scholastic book orders were due today.  October forms will be coming home soon.

Students that have the "Science in the Boxes" at home, please return them for Monday.

Parent/ Teacher Conferences are next Thursday evening and Friday day.  Please check the school website for booking instructions.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Wednesday, September 28th

Dear Parents,

Today we talked about emotions and matched a colour to a particular emotion:

We started a colour challenge: Paint a rainbow with only three colors (red, yellow and blue)
We worked in groups and will finish tomorrow.

Students will each get a turn to bring home our "Science in a Box."  Students will have the chance to bring in a colour experiment to share with the class.  Instructions are in "the box."

Great work on Raz-Kids! Please remember to read at least one book per day and answer the questions.  It looks like many of us are doing much more than that!  Great work everyone!

Have a nice evening and see you tomorrow!

Home Reading Begins!

Happy Tuesday!

Please check your child's backpack for their Home Reading Folder (Yellow) and their purple Field Trip notice.

Home Reading:

All log on information is located in the yellow folder sent home today and the students have had a chance to see how the program works.

Students should read and answer the questions to one book, every day.  Please ensure that they read the book and not only listen to it.

Please note that I have started the students at "A" level books.  Please let me know if this is too easy and I will increase their level.  Although you are there with your child, they should be able to read the book independently to move to the next level.

Field Trip:

Please see the purple form in your child's backpack. It contains information regarding our upcoming field trip. Official forms will be sent home at the end of the week.

Power Words:

Students have now practiced and should be able to recognize the following Power Words:

a
and
it
the
is
of
in
was

The new words for this week are:

that
I
he
to

Yesterday we read the book, "The Leaf Man" by Lois Ehlert and went on a nature walk (in the school boundaries) to collect leaves to create our own leaf men:

Today we talked about recycling and the importance of recycling plastic disposable water bottles.  We looked at the "Great Pacific Garbage Patch."  We then walked around the school to view the new water fountains which record the amount of water bottles saved by refilling their water bottles:

Happy Reading!

Happy 1st Day of Fall!

Dear Moms, Dads, Guardians and Family,

Today we thought we would show you some of the things we do on a daily basis.

Here we are correcting Ms. Bakkan's silly mistakes!

We decided, we need to help Ms. Bakkan learn to write!

Ask me why we skip count.  Here we are having a body break while practicing counting by 2s and 5s:

Ask me about "Fletcher and the Falling Leaves."

Stay tuned for instructions on how to access our online home reading program.

Parent Reminders:

-No School tomorrow.

-Beginning Monday, students may be called into the school at 8am by another teacher in the morning.

-Students will also start to independently find their parents after school (I will be there to make sure they find you!).

Have a great long weekend!

Ms. Bakkan

Wednesday in 1C

Dear Parents,

Today we finished our "Primary Colour" art inspired by Pieter Mondrian:

We practiced our Power Words and even built them with various classroom materials.

We are beginning to use "ten-frames."  We used them to show our age today.

We are excited to celebrate the first day of Fall tomorrow.

Parent reminders:

Please start contacting me via e-mail at cobakkan@cbe.ab.ca if you have CBE security clearance and are able to volunteer for our field trip to the Calgary Corn Maze on Wednesday, October 19th. We have received an update that new clearance is taking up to 12 weeks to obtain. Field trip forms will be sent home by the end of next week.

Scholastic book orders will be sent home tomorrow.  I will be placing the order on Friday, September 30th.  Please only send cheques as Scholastic does not accept cash or see the instructions on the order form to pay online (new option!).

There is no school for students on Friday.

Have a nice night!
Ms. Bakkan

Rainy Tuesday

Dear Parents,

Today we noticed many more leaves on our tree and felt Fall rolling in.  We stayed inside for morning recess but went outside at lunch.  We talked about the clothing we may need to start to wear as the weather gets colder.  Please send an extra pair of socks in your child's backpack during the wet weather if they do not have rain boots.

We read the books, "How Full is Your Bucket" and "Have You Filled a Bucket Today?" by Carol McCloud.  Please ask your child how they can fill other people's buckets.

We worked on our Pieter Mondrian inspired primary colour art.

Parent reminder:

-There is no school on Friday for students.

-Please ask your child if they need an extra snack in their lunch.

Have a great evening,
Ms. Bakkan

10th Day in Grade 1!

Dear Parents,

Thank you again for taking the time to check our blog.

Here are our new "Power Words" for this week:

1.) was
2.) of
3.) in
4.) is

Our sound/blend for the week is "Sh."

We discovered that two of our favorite TV shows start with this sound.  They are, "Shimmer and Shine" and "Shaun the Sheep." We now have a sheep friend in our room. :)

Today was our 10th day in grade one.  We decided to focus on making 10s in Math. 10 is a very important number! These are some of the ways we made 10:

We are continuing our study of primary colours in science and have started to look at Pieter Mondrian's abstract art to enrich this study.  Pieter Mondrian often painted using solely primary colours and familiar 2D shapes, such as the square and the rectangle.  Today we looked at some of his art and practiced using rulers in our sketch books.  Please stay tuned for pictures of our final art.

We wrote about our weekends in our journals.

We read the book, "Mouse Paint" by Ellen Walsh to further our understanding of primary colours.

In physical education, we practiced our underhand rolls and throws.

We had music today!

Have a great night and see you tomorrow!
Ms. Bakkan

Happy Thursday!

Dear Parents,

Today we practiced the word families "an" and "at."  Students did a great job of coming up with many words on their own!

Some of us like to write standing up, laying down or at our tables.

We finished our art based on "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds.

Hope to see you tonight.  :)

Ms. Bakkan
