Today we practiced patterns in many ways. We discovered that patterns are not only colours repeating but also by size, shape and symbols repeating! When given the challenge to create a pattern using only a whiteboard and black dry erase marker, we quickly discovered all the different ways to create patterns!
In partners, we came up with and presented an "ababab, aabbaabbaabb, and abcabcabc" patterns with body movements. Ask your child to show you theirs! Most students presented their patterns to the class.
We focused on the core (the beginning of the pattern that repeats), as well as patterns repeating three times in order to be a pattern.
Students discovered that Seasons repeat in an "ABCD" pattern every year! In other words; "Winter/Spring/Summer/Fall!"
We then created, "Pattern Worms" with beads and pipe cleaners. Thank you for the idea Miss Carstairs!
We then decided to hang our "worms" in "our" tree, so we could watch them appear as the leaves fall off as Winter approaches, watch them get covered in snow, watch them re-appear in Spring and disappear again in the Summer!
Getting ready to hang our worms.
Hiding in the trees.
There they are!
Tomorrow we will be taking a closer look at the changes that take place as we move from Summer into Fall. Students have expressed a great interest in what animals do during this time and we are excited to find out! We are also excited to talk about and explore the beautiful colours of Fall through art and poetry.
Assessment:
This and next week, we will be assessing each student's knowledge of letters (both upper and lower case), corresponding letter sounds and word association.
We also tried writing our alphabet from "A-Z" both in upper case and lower case all by ourselves! We got to look at our classroom alphabet but otherwise each of us did it on our own.
Parent Information:
Please see the e-mail sent out by Mr. Dyck today. Please note the school fundraiser that is currently in place. The school is accepting ANY (clean) cloth. This means: sheets, adult clothing, worn/stained clothing (but clean), linens, towels, blankets, etc.... The gently used children's clothing will likely be donated to families in need as Mr. Dyck explained but the remainder is weighed and recycled. The school raises money by the pounds of materials collected! This is an easy and potentially very profitable fundraiser for K.T.S. Plus, you can get rid of items and know that it is going to a great cause! Please bag your items and bring them to the school. Dates and further details are in the e-mail. Please pass this information on!
VOLUNTEERS: We were notified today that many parents that think they have a police security clearance that is valid for Calgary Board of Education schools in fact do not. If you are interested in volunteering in the school, in the class or on field trips, you need to have security clearance that came from a Calgary Board of Education school and is not expired. If you believe you have valid clearance, please e-mail Barb Rocca (Administrative Assistant) with your Full Legal Name (middle as well), your birthdate and the school that you received clearance from. Applications for new security clearances can be initiated through our office AS OF September 18th. We are unable to process applications before that.
Field Trips: Thursday evening, the grade one teachers will be mentioning a field trip to the Calgary Corn Maze on October 19th and providing more details about volunteering. If you believe you have current CALGARY BOARD clearance, please contact Barb Rocca with the above information. Your clearances ARE NOT transferred automatically. If you do not have clearance, you can apply as of Sept. 18th but unfortunately it takes several weeks for clearances to be obtained and you will likely not be able to obtain clearance before the field trip. Please note that official volunteers on CBE field trips are not able to bring additional children. We can discuss this further on the curriculum night or you can e-mail me at cobakkan@cbe.ab.ca
Please note that this Wednesday and Thursday evening blogs will not be as detailed due to meetings and the Parent Night. I look forward to seeing you then!
Thanks,
Ms. Bakkan
